What is IGP-M?
The IGP-M is an inflation index calculated monthly by Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV). It measures price variation at different economic stages, from production to final consumption, which explains its high sensitivity to exchange rates, commodities, and global economic shocks. Due to this scope, the index became known as 'rent inflation', being the reference for millions of contracts in Brazil.
How is IGP-M calculated?
The calculation of IGP-M is based on a weighted average of three sub-indices, each representing a distinct stage of the economy:
📦 IPA – Broad Producer Price Index (60%)
Monitors wholesale prices, with strong influence from agricultural commodities, industrial goods, and exchange rate variations.
🛒 IPC – Consumer Price Index (30%)
Tracks price variation of goods and services consumed by families.
🏗️ INCC – National Construction Cost Index (10%)
Reflects costs of materials, labor, and services in civil construction.
